A half marathon is 13.1 miles, and last time I checked, that’s an odd number. I have no issue signing up to race that distance.

But when my training schedule calls for 9, 11, 13, 17, 19 miles? I hate it. Multiples of five are fine. Even numbers are fine. It’s just one of my runner superstitions.

Nineteen miles on my training plan this weekend. Say it isn't so!

Although I don’t have many, I do have a few other superstitions (or maybe just odd habits) when it comes to training and racing.

I have to lay out all my gear, shoes, and nutrition before any long run. If I’m taking water bottles, I fill them up and put them in the fridge the night before, too.

If I’m racing, that bib sure as heck better be pinned to my shirt before I go to bed. No crooked bibs happening here, friends.

Pinned on straight. I won’t tell you how many times I re-pinned it.

I stop at every single aid station on the course. Always. Since I dehydrate pretty easily, I stop just in case.

I also have certain favorites when it comes to my running gear — I won’t wear just anything when it comes to my long runs!

What about all of you? Any little quirks when it comes to your running?

One Response to Odd Distance Runs & Other Superstitions

  1. Not related to running, but I hate odd numbers for the volume on the television etc. What’s up with that?!
