How Crohn’s Disease Made Me Weird
Ah, day two of National Health Blog Post Month. Follow along with the other posters on Twitter, #NHBPM, and stick here every day in November to see what my rule breaking self is doing. Yes, it’s day two and I’m already coming up with my own twist on the prompt. Apparently I’m not good at following rules.
So today I’m supposed to tell you what’s weird about my health. The problem is, I don’t really know what’s weird about my health. I have Crohn’s disease, but is that weird? Over 1.4 million Americans have Inflammatory Bowel Disease, so it’s not like I’m the only weirdo. Instead, I’m going to tell you about some weird things I do because I have this disease… and there are a lot.
I pack insane amounts of underwear when I go on vacation. I’m a horrible over-packer. When I went to Boston last month, I brought a big checked bag for a 5-day trip. I’m terrible. But undies? Forget it. I easily pack 2 – 3 pairs of underwear per day. I never use that many, but it makes me feel better to know I’ll never run out of clean ones. I always bring extra medication, too.

Suitcase of a Crohn’s patient. That whole netting part is full of medication and vitamins. Party. You can’t see all the undies in this picture, but I promise there were a lot.
I buy flushable wipes… for my 27 year old self. I love going over to the houses and apartments of fellow IBDers, because there’s one thing we always have in common. Wipes! It’s true, the wipes on the back of my toilet are not for some secret toddler child I have. They are for me. They make my hiney feel better on days when I’m potty-ing more than I’d like. Greatest invention ever.
I snort vitamins. Okay, kind of. I have to take Vitamin B12 in a nasal spray form. My body doesn’t absorb it any other way, so it’s either monthly injections or nasal spray. The spray seems to be working for now, so I’ll take it. Mmmm.
I eat before I attend functions where there will be food. Unless I know for sure what I’ll be fed, I always eat something before I go. You’re serving dinner? That’s awesome, but I was picky before I was diagnosed. Crohn’s disease did not make my eating habits any less weird. If I’m going somewhere that has food, but I won’t be able to choose my own meal, I always eat beforehand. Just in case.
What are your weird habits? Health related, not health related, I don’t care. Tell me all of them.

Haha undies and pills… so much of my luggage back when I had a colon. Now it’s ostomy supplies and less pills. The wipes are SO necessary with terrible guts!! I eat before functions that serve food too, and I usually stash snacks in my purse just in case. So we’re both weird.

Hahaha your weirdness outdoes mine I’m sure! I carry around this little child-sized backpack shaped like a kitty because I dislike purses but I do like kitties. It wasn’t long before it was stuffed to the brim, and if anyone picks it up they’re always like WHOA this is heavy! Why do you carry around so much stuff? It started with just a little waterproof bottle of serious emergency meds, but soon my regular pain meds found their way in there, along with nausea meds because I have a sensitive tummy, tea, peppermints, pretty much everything I’ve ever thought of wanting during an unexpected flare of pain. I’m a walking pharmacy disguised as a kitty.
I’ll have to do a blog post on this… I’m terrible at post-a-day stuff, but I’ll add this to my list of topics to write about sometime. Great post, I like your bending of the rules.
